Food Safety and SB510

Our access to safe food is under attack constantly. Senate Bill 510 (S. 510) is the most current attack. Of course the attacks will always come under the guise of making our food safer, thereby eroding any dissenter's argument in the eyes of the public. S. 510 will, through fees and regulation, destroy small local farms, put an end to farmers markets, and hand over the industry of food production to corporations such as Monsanto and ConAgra Foods.

Potential threats presented by genetically modified seeds and food must be understood by the citizens of this state, the country, and beyond. Long term effects of ingesting these "foods" is not known. The safety of eating corn which has been modified to contain a built-in pesticide simply must be studied- before it is allowed in the grocery stores and markets for consumption by our families, either directly or through feeding it to livestock.

Another concern is the "suicide" gene built into some genetically modified seeds, which causes the plant which is grown with the seed to be infertile. This infertility can spread, via pollen, to natural crops and is a threat to the world food supply.
